FOLKED UP 2 – Great success!

So last night around this time I was on stage playing at my 2nd bi-monthly FOLKED UP night at The Maze, a music venue in the great shire of Nottingham!

FOLKED UP is an event I’ve started organising to showcase the local acoustic and folk inclined artists I really love from around Nottingham. It’s a labour of love and I take a financial risk putting it on – I spend close to £100 each time and make that money back through the door entry fee.

Last night I went through my usual anxiety-induced freak out that I have when doing stuff like this. I was crapping myself that the turnout would be rubbish – thankfully it was quite the opposite! I must say, it can be a bizarre thing putting on your own shows, because the anxious anticipation and pre-gig fear can be horrible, especially so for someone like myself whose anxiety manifests itself physically (barely able to talk, dry mouth, tense throat, acid reflux, sinus problems, you name it!) – but the HUGE sense of accomplishment you get from seeing it all go well and witnessing a busy room of people all having a great time on a week night – that makes it all worth it!

Once I saw that people were in fact turning up, and having a good time too, I started to relax. By the time I got on stage I was really enjoying myself and I felt my set went really well. It’s always good when you get off stage having felt like you had fun playing to a great audience.

Other than myself, the young and talented Frankie Rudolf opened the evening brilliantly with his endearing and catchy folk-pop tunes, and after my set the excellent Marc Block and The Breezes delivered a storming set. Finally to close the evening Joshua Keogh enchanted the audience with his excellent songs and voice. I couldn’t have asked for a better set of musicians to play at my show, so THANK YOU to everyone who played – you are all awesome! Also thanks once again to The Maze for letting me put it on and just generally being very supportive towards what I do. Lastly, thanks to everyone who came – I hope you all had a good time – everyone I spoke to said they had a great evening, which I was really pleased about :)

Make sure you get down to Broadway cinema if you’re at Branch Out Festival at the end of the month (27th-28th Oct) – I’m still waiting to hear what day and time I’m going to be playing – but hey, I know the venue at least :P Really looking forward to playing alongside such an excellent line up (check out the website to see who else is playing.) Oh, and it’s all FREE too so you have no excuse not to come if you’re living in Nottingham or nearby!

FOLKED UP gig review and some annoucements!

Okay, I know once again it’s been a while since I’ve blogged. It’s just so hard with running my own business at the moment, as well as being a part time busker AND doing all my musician-y stuff. I’ve also been very busy with doing my new weekly Youtube videos – it’s a lot harder than you’d think to keep up with, especially when you’re doing videos with properly recorded and mixed audio and multiple camera shots etc…

…Anyway – some quick announcements first! My cat Betty gave birth to FOUR beautiful kittens 3 weeks ago :D They are all doing exceptionally well and it’s lovely to see how they’re all developing and showing different personalities. We haven’t named them yet but I have already decided I’m going to keep one, as are my mum and my sister. In fact, I think it’s likely that between us we’ll keep them all as they are uber cute and awesome!

I’ve been filming them once or twice every week and I’m going to upload a little document of their growth to Youtube very soon :)

For now here are some purdy pictures!

Okay – announcement number two! I’m going to be hosting an open mic night and Fellows, Morton and Clayton in Nottingham. The launch night will be taking place on the Friday 21st September 2012 so make sure you’re there to check out some awesome local talent – and of course if you’re an artist come down and show us your musical skills!

The night will run from 10pm-12pm and there will be a free drink for all performers. I’m very much looking forward to hosting this as I always enjoy going to play at open mics in Nottingham so the opportunity to run my own was one I could not turn down! I’ll be setting up a Facebook page and event etc soon so watch this space for more info!

Okay, lastly, a quick review of last night’s FOLKED UP gig at The Maze, Nottingham. For those of you who don’t know I organised this show myself and so I was working my arse off right up until last minute making sure the night was a success! We had excellent performances from local artists Ali Bonsai and Elena Hargreaves – plus we had Clara Barker from the Isle of Man who came along to play whilst on her UK tour (I’ll be supporting her tonight in Leicester at The Musician too.) I headlined the night and really loved playing for everyone. The audience were so attentive and the atmosphere was just right for an acoustic night.

All the artists who played were fantastic, and I’d like to say a HUGE thanks to The Maze for letting me put the night on. Also a BIG BIG thanks goes out to my mum who baked 38 delicious cakes for people to enjoy. We had a table set up with free cakes, sweets and party rings! Gimmicky, I know, but all those little things just help make a night more fun and stand out from being just another week night gig. In total we had nearly 30 people attend, which is a great turn out for a small local gig on a Monday night. I was £6-7 away from breaking even (I had venue hire, sound engineer hire and the cost
of posters and all the food to cover) so that suited me fine. I’m quite happy to lose a little cash if it means I get to enjoy such a wonderful evening and have the opportunity to provide some great entertainment for the public! :)

That’s it from me for now – I’ll have some videos of the night up on my Youtube account soon, but for now I’m going to chill, then cook some dinner, and then head off to the Musician in Leicester for tonight’s gig!

Take it easy,
Marc.

An announcement – My song ‘Fears’ to appear in the film ‘Sprawl’!

Just a quick one to announce that my song will be included in a scene for the motion picture ‘Sprawl’ – an independent movie by Trick Candle Productions, starring Michael Madsen and Nicole Fox.

You can find the film’s Facebook page here to keep up to date on when the film will be released. I’m very excited to be a part of it and hope you will all check it out upon release :)

Don’t forget I’m playing Glastonbudget Festival this weekend on Sunday 3rd June! I’ll also be playing in Nottingham at Antenna bar on the 1st. I’m hoping to be in London on the 4th (still re-arranging a venue after a cancellation though) – might just go and busk there if I can’t get a venue sorted? Then I’m hitting Derby at The Friary on the 5th and The Maze back in Nottingham again on the 6th.

Hope you’re all enjoying the sunny weather here in the UK (or anywhere else, for that matter!)

Marc.
