Some news :)

So I have made the tough decision to remove my first album ‘Perfectly Fine’ from sale. 30 days from now it will no longer be available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon or any other online retailers. It will be available exclusively as a free download from www.marcreeves.co.uk and www.jamendo.com – I was listening to it this morning and I’m still proud of it and I think it should still be out there for people to hear, but I don’t think it’s representative of me anymore and the production quality isn’t really up to scratch for it to be sellable. I just want people to enjoy it as a demo of where I started – a portrait of a younger Marc Reeves. Hope that makes sense. I’m thinking of re-recording some vocals and re-mastering the second record, although that’s just an idea at the moment! :) Will keep you posted!

Thank you to everyone who came down to the album launch at The Maze on the 22nd – especially considering the weather the turnout was great and the vibe was fantastic. Thanks to The Maze for being awesome and all the supports that played – you were all amazing! There will be video footage up soon of the night for those who missed it – subscribe to my Youtube channel to keep updated on that front!

Things are a little quiet on the gig front for now, but I’m playing a very exciting show at The Guitar Bar in Nottingham with the amazing Gallery 47 on the 12th April so that should be great :)

Take care everyone – catch you soon!

New music video – ‘I Need You’ filmed in Nottingham, song recorded at Mix it! Studios

….so here’s a new music video! Filmed on a very cold day in the snow. The song was recorded on my old Tascam portastudio (which records to cassette tape) for a lo-fi ish vibe. Something weird happened with the tape when recording – if you listen really close you can hear people talking from a recording that was on the tape used. Plus lots of tape hiss! As always, the song is FREE! (for now)

Check out the video below:

My new album, out March 2012 – ‘The Beginning’ by Marc Reeves.

Sorry I’ve not updated you all in a long time – it’s because I’ve been so busy preparing the release of my new album, ‘The Beginning’. There’s going to be lots of music videos accompanying the album, as well as lots of live shows and an album launch party. Here’s a little back story on the album:

“Recording started about a month or two after releasing my 2nd album, Remember Me - released in Feb 2012. I do a lot of work as a session musician at a local studio, working with students, and as I had some new material and some sessions lined up, I kind of unintentionally started recording another album. From that point onwards, I recorded at my home studio and local studios until I had around 30 songs recorded. I had no real plan at that point, and was just writing a lot and recording whenever the opportunity presented itself. It was only when I realised I had several album’s worth of material that I stared wondering what to do with it all. I toyed with the idea of a double album, or a series of 4 track EP’s, but I eventually decided on releasing two separate albums in 2013, the first of which is being released in March and is called ‘The Beginning’. I mixed and mastered both records in my home studio myself.”

Here is the cover artwork:

And here is a video blog about the album – I discuss some of the themes, and the meaning behind the lyrics and songs:

The track list is as follows:

Limelight
By the Waterside
Secrets
It’s Easy
Mary
I Need You
Ghost Town
Heavy Cloud
Little Bird
On a Wire
Only Waiting
Pills
For Mike
History

There’s 14 tracks in total – this is my most ‘acoustic’ album to date, with 9 of those 14 tracks being pretty much just acoustic guitar and vocal. Most of these songs were really written as solo songs that worked as acoustic and vocals pieces, and I wanted to retain the stripped down, intimate vibe my live performances often have. There’s also a full ‘band’ (ie me playing drums, bass, electric guitar, piano and other stuff) on some of the other tracks, and there’s a lot of violin (played by my friend Rosa) on the album. I can’t wait for you to hear it! :D

And yes, there will be a 2nd album out later this year, with 12 more tracks for you! :D

More news soon!

Nottsfactor 2012 – a competition wot I took part in and it was good the end

Hello everyone,

Long time no write-y post-y on blog-y! I hope you all are keeping well and haven’t forgotten about me. I’m sure you’ve missed my witty and downright incredible writing! uh, yeah…..

So tonight I took part in a competition called Nottsfactor 2012. To briefly explain, out of 30 acts who applied online, 10 were picked to perform at a live final at Antenna in Nottingham. These 10 would be judged by a panel of four experts and a winner would be chosen at the end of the evening. The prize? £500, plus a bunch of gig opportunities, a radio interview, photoshoot, plus lots of other stuff. It was a pretty immense prize on offer!

I’ll be honest –  I entered this for the prize, particularly the prize money (I actually didn’t know about the other stuff  until tonight.) I see no shame in that – it is after all a competition. I’m a seasoned performer now to a degree – I’ve been playing live solo for the better part of three years. I’ve played at Antenna itself several times. So I wasn’t really in it for any kind of exposure/gig opportunity. Perhaps that’s why tonight it felt slightly strange when I get up on stage and started playing. Maybe it was the 2-song per performer set length. Maybe it was the fact we were all being judged.

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like or perform very well in competitions. I like to get up on stage and perform without pretense, without ulterior motives – I want to play because I feel like playing, like sharing my emotion and passion with other people. Not because I want to win some prize. Through no fault of their own, competitions just always feel a little unnatural and too forced an environment/atmosphere for me to feel relaxed and just perform naturally and honestly. I was quite looking forward to playing tonight and not really nervous about it, but as soon as I got on stage I felt like I was there for the wrong reasons and it made me uneasy and nervous. I felt like an amateur, a novice performer – like it was my first gig again. Suddenly those butterflies in my stomach started pulling me back to that place without warning. I didn’t feel like a professional. I hate that feeling. When I’m at my most confident I feel like I could take on the world – like I could play anywhere, any time. I seem to float between anxiety ridden, social misfit Marc, and ‘I feel right in the world’, confident at ease Marc. The latter Marc is the one that I think has a shot at a career in the music business. He is the professional.

I’ve had this self-doubt at every other competition I’ve done before. It’s kind of a downer because aside from that it was a really excellent night, very well organised – the judges were great, everyone who performed was awesome and it was a fun evening. So I hate to have this slight bad taste in my mouth – I’m only human I guess! I would like to say a massive CONGRATS to ‘One boy, One girl’ for winning though, and for Band of Jackals for being the runners up. You were both incredible and so deserving of winning – as was everyone else that took part. Nottingham HAS got talent!

Still, I don’t know, this kind of thing just leaves me wondering where I’m headed with all this and what I really want from it – I wish I could be a robot and just be at the top of my game all the time, but there’s just so much BS surrounding performances sometimes that it just takes me out of my element. I can’t act it out like some artists do – I fall apart if I’m not feeling the music and the vibe. I want to feel it every time, I really do. I just want to excel, to be appreciated for what I do, to be recognized  and for my music to bring the same happiness and meaning to people’s lives that all the music I love to listen to does.

Plus, I have no idea where I’m going with this now – this is literally my stream of consciousness running riot here. I apologize if it makes little sense. Earlier on the bus journey home I was thinking of writing a book – literally. I was literally writing it in my head. Maybe I should actually write it for real. Maybe I should spend some money on some new things. Maybe I should travel the world. Maybe.

Perhaps.

Night :)

FOLKED UP 2 – Great success!

So last night around this time I was on stage playing at my 2nd bi-monthly FOLKED UP night at The Maze, a music venue in the great shire of Nottingham!

FOLKED UP is an event I’ve started organising to showcase the local acoustic and folk inclined artists I really love from around Nottingham. It’s a labour of love and I take a financial risk putting it on – I spend close to £100 each time and make that money back through the door entry fee.

Last night I went through my usual anxiety-induced freak out that I have when doing stuff like this. I was crapping myself that the turnout would be rubbish – thankfully it was quite the opposite! I must say, it can be a bizarre thing putting on your own shows, because the anxious anticipation and pre-gig fear can be horrible, especially so for someone like myself whose anxiety manifests itself physically (barely able to talk, dry mouth, tense throat, acid reflux, sinus problems, you name it!) – but the HUGE sense of accomplishment you get from seeing it all go well and witnessing a busy room of people all having a great time on a week night – that makes it all worth it!

Once I saw that people were in fact turning up, and having a good time too, I started to relax. By the time I got on stage I was really enjoying myself and I felt my set went really well. It’s always good when you get off stage having felt like you had fun playing to a great audience.

Other than myself, the young and talented Frankie Rudolf opened the evening brilliantly with his endearing and catchy folk-pop tunes, and after my set the excellent Marc Block and The Breezes delivered a storming set. Finally to close the evening Joshua Keogh enchanted the audience with his excellent songs and voice. I couldn’t have asked for a better set of musicians to play at my show, so THANK YOU to everyone who played – you are all awesome! Also thanks once again to The Maze for letting me put it on and just generally being very supportive towards what I do. Lastly, thanks to everyone who came – I hope you all had a good time – everyone I spoke to said they had a great evening, which I was really pleased about :)

Make sure you get down to Broadway cinema if you’re at Branch Out Festival at the end of the month (27th-28th Oct) – I’m still waiting to hear what day and time I’m going to be playing – but hey, I know the venue at least :P Really looking forward to playing alongside such an excellent line up (check out the website to see who else is playing.) Oh, and it’s all FREE too so you have no excuse not to come if you’re living in Nottingham or nearby!

FOLKED UP gig review and some annoucements!

Okay, I know once again it’s been a while since I’ve blogged. It’s just so hard with running my own business at the moment, as well as being a part time busker AND doing all my musician-y stuff. I’ve also been very busy with doing my new weekly Youtube videos – it’s a lot harder than you’d think to keep up with, especially when you’re doing videos with properly recorded and mixed audio and multiple camera shots etc…

…Anyway – some quick announcements first! My cat Betty gave birth to FOUR beautiful kittens 3 weeks ago :D They are all doing exceptionally well and it’s lovely to see how they’re all developing and showing different personalities. We haven’t named them yet but I have already decided I’m going to keep one, as are my mum and my sister. In fact, I think it’s likely that between us we’ll keep them all as they are uber cute and awesome!

I’ve been filming them once or twice every week and I’m going to upload a little document of their growth to Youtube very soon :)

For now here are some purdy pictures!

Okay – announcement number two! I’m going to be hosting an open mic night and Fellows, Morton and Clayton in Nottingham. The launch night will be taking place on the Friday 21st September 2012 so make sure you’re there to check out some awesome local talent – and of course if you’re an artist come down and show us your musical skills!

The night will run from 10pm-12pm and there will be a free drink for all performers. I’m very much looking forward to hosting this as I always enjoy going to play at open mics in Nottingham so the opportunity to run my own was one I could not turn down! I’ll be setting up a Facebook page and event etc soon so watch this space for more info!

Okay, lastly, a quick review of last night’s FOLKED UP gig at The Maze, Nottingham. For those of you who don’t know I organised this show myself and so I was working my arse off right up until last minute making sure the night was a success! We had excellent performances from local artists Ali Bonsai and Elena Hargreaves – plus we had Clara Barker from the Isle of Man who came along to play whilst on her UK tour (I’ll be supporting her tonight in Leicester at The Musician too.) I headlined the night and really loved playing for everyone. The audience were so attentive and the atmosphere was just right for an acoustic night.

All the artists who played were fantastic, and I’d like to say a HUGE thanks to The Maze for letting me put the night on. Also a BIG BIG thanks goes out to my mum who baked 38 delicious cakes for people to enjoy. We had a table set up with free cakes, sweets and party rings! Gimmicky, I know, but all those little things just help make a night more fun and stand out from being just another week night gig. In total we had nearly 30 people attend, which is a great turn out for a small local gig on a Monday night. I was £6-7 away from breaking even (I had venue hire, sound engineer hire and the cost
of posters and all the food to cover) so that suited me fine. I’m quite happy to lose a little cash if it means I get to enjoy such a wonderful evening and have the opportunity to provide some great entertainment for the public! :)

That’s it from me for now – I’ll have some videos of the night up on my Youtube account soon, but for now I’m going to chill, then cook some dinner, and then head off to the Musician in Leicester for tonight’s gig!

Take it easy,
Marc.
